Físico danés. Estudió la estructura del átomo con J.J. Thomson y
Ernest Rutherford en las universidades de Cambridge y Manchester. Fue uno de los primeros en ver la importancia del
número atómico de un elemento y postuló que cualquier átomo puede existir sólo en un conjunto discreto de estados caracterizados por valores determinados de energía. Fue el primero en aplicar la teoría cuántica a la estructura atómica y molecular, y su concepto del núcleo atómico fue un paso clave para entender procesos como la
fisión nuclear. Desde 1920 a 1962 dirigió el recientemente creado Instituto de física teórica en Copenhague. Su trabajo sobre la teoría atómica le mereció el Premio Nobel de Física en 1922. Fue presidente de la Royal Danish Academy desde 1939 hasta su muerte. Aunque contribuyó a la investigación de la bomba atómica en EE.UU. durante la segunda guerra mundial, se dedicó más tarde a la causa del control de armas. Recibió el primer Premio Átomos para la Paz de EE.UU. en 1957. El elemento 107, borio, fue nombrado en su honor. Su hijo Aage Niels Bohr (
n. 1922) compartió el Premio Nobel de Física de 1975 con Ben Mottelson (
n. 1926) y James Rainwater (
n. 1917–m. 1986) por su trabajo sobre núcleos atómicos.
